Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian statesman who served as the 10th Prime Minister of India from 1998 to 2004. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was the first non-Congress Prime Minister to serve a full five-year term. He was also a poet and a member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for several decades. Early life of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh on 25 December 1924. He was the son of a school teacher and was the eldest of his three siblings. His early education was at Saraswati Shishu Mandir and later he attended Victoria College in Gwalior. He was a brilliant student and was particularly good at Hindi and English literature. He was also a great orator and was well known for his public speaking skills. As a young man, he was drawn to the freedom struggle and was inspired by the works of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Subhash Chandra Bose. He was also an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

His family

He was the eldest of four children born to Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and Krishna Devi. His father was a school teacher and a poet. He was an active participant in the Indian independence movement and was arrested multiple times. He attended Victoria College (presently Laxmi Bai College) in Gwalior and DAV College in Kanpur. He graduated with a first-class degree in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur, in 1945. After completing his education, he became a journalist and also joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
